CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The NC State softball team extended its win streak to four on Wednesday with its third consecutive run-rule victory of the year. The Wolfpack (7-6) defeated Charlotte (5-7), 12-2 (5), at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium, as the game featured a combined three home runs from Logan Morris and Brigette Nordberg.
Of Note
-Skylar Johnston, Morris, Nordberg and Sam Russ extended their reached base safely streaks. Morris now owns a seven-game streak, Nordberg holds a six-game streak while Johnston and Russ extended theirs to five.
-Nordberg has homered five times in the last two games and leads the team with eight on the season. She's the first player in NC State history to hit five home runs in back-to-back games.
-All four Wolfpack pitchers saw time in the circle. Devin Wallace threw the first two innings, and Sydney Nester, Brittany Nimmo and Kama Woodall hurled an inning apiece. Nimmo (1-0) was credited with her first win of the year as she did not allow a run to score in her outing.
-Four different players had a multi-hit outing. Nordberg went 3-for-4 while Morris, Kelli Wagner and Natalie Jones tallied two hits apiece.
-NC State has score 10 or more runs in a single game on three separate occasions.
How It Happened
-The Wolfpack got off to an aggressive start, scoring four runs on as many hits and an error in the first inning. Nordberg hit a one-out single and stole second, and Morris's base hit to center field allowed her to score. Johnston proceeded to reach on an error and advance Morris to second, and back-to-back passed balls tacked on a second run. Angie Rizzi followed up with a two-out walk, and Kelli Wagner cleared the bases with a double to right field for her first career extra-base hit.
-Nordberg added two more runs in the second with a two-run home run to right field after Sam Russ drew a leadoff walk.
-NC State doubled its lead in the third with six runs on five hits, highlighted by Nordberg's grand slam. Three singles loaded the bases for Russ, who walked in the first run. With the bases still loaded and no outs, Nordberg homered to center field for her first career grand slam. Morris followed with a solo shot to center field in the next at-bat for the final run of the frame.
-Charlotte avoided the shutout in the bottom of the third. Spenser Gray and Meredith Harris led off with a single up the middle and double to right field, respectively, and Katie Manring's sacrifice fly to left field scored Gray.
-In the fifth Bethany Doty walked in a run with the bases loaded and two outs, giving the 49ers its only other run of the contest.
