NC State has won five of last six meetings with Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In a thrilling game that featured nine ties and 16 lead changes, No. 9/12 NC State women's basketball team (24-3, 11-3 ACC) picked up a big rivalry win on Sunday afternoon at UNC-Chapel Hill, defeating the Tar Heels by a final score of 74-69 inside Carmichael Arena.

NC State trailed 68-66 with just 2:08 remaining in the game before freshman Elissa Cunane hit a clutch field goal in the paint on a Kiara Leslie assist with 1:29 to go. The Wolfpack defense held strong on UNC-CH's next possession, and Leslie scored on NC State's next trip down the floor to give the Pack a 70-68 lead with 38 seconds left. Paris Kea went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line on the Tar Heels' next possession, and sophomore Kayla Jones sank four straight free throws down the stretch to close out the four-point road win.

Leslie led the Wolfpack with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by 14 points from Kayla Jones (6-of-6 FT), 12 from Cunane, and 10 from Aislinn Konig. Senior DD Rogers tied for a game high with 11 rebounds.

UNC-CH's Kea led all players with 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field. She was joined in double figures by 18 points from Shayla Bennett and 10 from Janelle Bailey. Bailey also pulled down 11 total rebounds.

Postgame Notes
-NC State has won five of the last six meetings between the teams, three of the last four in Chapel Hill, and leads the series 58-51.
-After combining for 54 total points in the first half, the teams combined for 53 points in the fourth quarter alone.
-NC State out-rebounded UNC-CH by a 41-36 margin and outscored the Tar Heels 32-18 in the paint.
-Entering Sunday's game, Jones was 6-for-11 at the free-throw line in her 41-game career. She went 6-for-6 during the win.

The teams slugged through a slow first half, with UNC-CH earning a 29-26 advantage through the opening 20 minutes. Leslie and Konig each scored seven points for the Wolfpack, with Leslie pulling down a half-high eight rebounds. NC State shot 11-of-34 (.324) from the field and held the Tar Heels to a 9-of-30 (.300) success rate. Kea led all players in the opening 20 minutes with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

NC State concludes the 2018-19 regular season next week with two games. The Wolfpack will visit No. 4/4 Louisville on Feb. 28 and host No. 14/14 Miami on March 3.
