
Softball Enters Top 25 Poll For First Time Since 2016

RALEIGH – Thanks to a 3-2 outing at the USF Opening Weekend Invitational in Tampa, Fla., that was highlighted by a 4-1 win over No. 7 Arizona, the NC State softball team checked in at 23rd on Softball America's first regular season poll of 2019.
This is the first time the Wolfpack has been nationally ranked since Jan. 26, 2016, when it was listed at No. 23 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA)/USA Today preseason rankings and No. 25 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball preseason poll. Following its first-ever Super Regional appearance, the Pack finished the 2015 season ranked 19th in both polls.
The last time NC State was ranked in a regular season poll was on March 10, 2015, when it was ranked 25th in both polls after a sweep over then-No. 23 Notre Dame.
NC State is additionally ranked in this week's Fastpitch News poll at 17th, and receiving votes for this week's NFCA/USA Today 29) and ESPN.com/Usa Softball (3) polls.
In Tampa, the Wolfpack also picked up wins over South Florida (2-1), who was receiving votes at the time, and Illinois State (10-9). Its two losses were to No. 4 Florida (2-1), a game that ended on a walk off sacrifice fly, and No. 17 Michigan (4-3).
NC State will open its home slate this weekend when it welcomes Nebraska, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin for the ACC/B1G Challenge. The Wolfpack and Panthers will play the Huskers and Badgers twice apiece, but not each other in the tournament.
