Former @PackWrestle All-American Gantt takes third at Senior Nationals
FORT WORTH, TEXAS – After a pair of top-five finishes at this weekend's U.S. Senior Nationals, the Wolfpack Wrestling Club has now qualified a total of four athletes for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials this April.
Â
Former NC State All-American Tommy Gantt placed third at 74 kg. After reaching the semifinals on Saturday, Gantt earned a win in the consolation semifinals before receiving a medical forfeit in the third place bout on Sunday.
Â
Down 10-4 in the final minute of the consi-semis against Arizona State's Anthony Valencia, Gantt scored his second four-point throw of the match and then got the winning two points with only one second left for a 13-12 win.
Â
The top five in each weight class this weekend at the Senior Nationals in Fort Worth automatically qualified for the Olympic Trials.
Â
At 97 kg in the fifth place match, in a battle of a pair that train at the Wolfpack's RTC, former Duke All-American Jacob Kasper downed current NC State volunteer coach Timmy McCall 8-4.
Â
McCall will have one final chance to qualify for the Olympic Trails at a Last Chance Qualifier in March.
Â
Prior to this weekend's action, the Wolfpack Wrestling Club already qualified two athletes for the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Â
Nick Gwiazdowski (125 kg) was automatically qualified as he is a returning World Team member. Michael Macchiavello (97 kg) earned a bid to the trials after he made the finals of the Bill Farrell Memorial Invitational in November.
