Cunane and Konig Named to Naismith Trophy Watch List

Preseason honors continue rolling in for Wolfpack

ATLANTA – Sophomore center Elissa Cunane and senior guard Aislinn Konig have been named to the 2020 Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Wednesday morning.

The Wolfpack duo is among 50 candidates vying for the 2020 Women's Player of the Year honor. The Watch List will be trimmed in early February to 30 candidates and then narrowed down to 10 national semifinalists on March 3, 2020. Following those results, four finalists will be named on March 20, and the winner of the 2020 Citizen Naismith Trophy for Women's Player of the Year will be announced on April 4.

A Preseason All-ACC Team selection by the league's head coaches and the ACC's blue ribbon panel, Cunane had a remarkable freshman season in 2018-19. The Summerfield, N.C., native earned All-ACC Freshman Team honors, All-ACC Academic Team honors, First Team All-ACC Tournament honors, and was named ACC Rookie of the Week on four occasions throughout the season. Cunane started 11 games and played in all 34 for the Wolfpack last season, averaging 24.8 minutes, 13.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per contest. She scored 10+ points 22 times and 20+ points seven times. She made 136 free throws to set a new record by a freshman in program history and scored 464 total points to rank as the second best freshman scoring season in program history.

A Preseason All-ACC Team selection by the league's head coaches, Konig shot 40.1 percent (93-of-232) from distance during the 2018-19 season and is operating at a 36.7 percent success rate (214-of-583) for her career. During the 2018-19 season, Konig averaged 3.8 assists per game. For her career, she is averaging 2.9 per contest and an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.78. Her scoring average has improved during each of her first three seasons, going from 7.1 ppg (freshman), 10.3 ppg (sophomore), to 10.7 ppg (junior). For her career, she is averaging 9.8 points per game.

The 14th-ranked NC State women's basketball team officially opens the 2019-20 season at home on Wednesday evening when North Carolina A&T comes to town. Tip-off between the Wolfpack and Aggies is scheduled for 7 pm from Kay Yow Court inside Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum with live streaming coverage provided by ACCNX.
