1/31/2019 12:00:00 PM | Swimming
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Wolfpack will once again face a test against some of the nation's top squads as the No. 5/6 NC State men's and women's swimming and diving teams travel to Austin, Texas for a tri-meet against the Texas Longhorns and the Arizona Wildcats. The meet is set to run Feb. 1-2 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Friday's action begins at 5 p.m. EST, and the meet will wrap up Saturday starting at 12 p.m. EST.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Wolfpack used a record-breaking outing to sweep a pair of top-15 Virginia teams at home on Jan. 26. The No. 6 Wolfpack women defeated fifth-ranked Virginia, who won the 2018 ACC team title, by a 167-127 score, and the No. 5 NC State men took a 185-100 win over the Cavaliers.
With the sweep, both of NC State's squads remained unbeaten in dual action this season, and the Pack has swept the Cavaliers in each of the teams' last two meetings in Raleigh.
NC State set new pool records in nine events, and freshman Kylee Alons broke a program record in the 200-yard butterfly.
PACKED ACC PERFORMER OF THE WEEK LIST:
For the second week in a row, the Wolfpack saw three of its swimmers and divers honored as Performer of the Week by the conference. It also marked the second straight week that the Pack swept the ACC Swimmer of the Week honors.
Alons was honored as ACC Women's Swimmer of the Week for the second week in a row after securing a pair of first-place finishes, including a program record in the 200-yard butterfly. The Fort Collins, Colo. native won both butterfly events with NCAA B cut times and placed third in the 100-yard freestyle.
Eric Knowles was named ACC Men's Swimmer of the week for the first time in his career. He swept the distance events, dropping the Wolfpack's fastest 1000-yard freestyle time of the season and also placing first in the 500-yard freestyle.
Holt Gray picked up a pair of podium finishes on both boards on the way to garnering ACC Men's Diver of the Week honors for the second time this season. He picked up a win on the three-meter for the second straight meet and posted NCAA Zone scores on both boards.
PACK IN THE POLLS:
The latest CSCAA/TYR Top 25 rankings were released Jan. 23, and the Wolfpack women rank No. 5 in the nation while the Pack men are tabbed at No. 5.
NC State has yet to see either team fall outside of the top 11 during the 2018-19 season, and both squads have been ranked in the top nine of the last four national polls. The Wolfpack is also the only program in the ACC with both of its teams featured inside the top 10.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
The tri-meet will pit the Pack up against a strong field of nationally-ranked teams. Texas' women sit at the top of the national standings, and its men follow right behind with a No. 2 national ranking.
The Longhorn men are reigning national champions after five individual golds and two relay golds led them to the team trophy at the 2018 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
NC State's men enter the weekend having won their last two regular-season matchups against the Longhorns, the last coming with a 176-116 victory over Texas in Raleigh last season.
Arizona's men check in at No. 15 in the nation, and the Wildcat women are receiving votes in the poll. This weekend's meet marks the first time under the leadership of head coach Braden Holloway that the Pack will face the Wildcats.
UP NEXT:
NC State will conclude its regular season at the Carolina College Invitational from Feb. 8-10 before turning its attention to postseason competition, beginning with the ACC Championships.
