Wolfpack duo recognized for stellar academic and athletic performance
GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State volleyball's Jade Parchment and Teni Sopitan have been named to the All-ACC Academic Team, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Â
Both are first-time recipients of the award and Sopitan was also named a Second Team All-ACC selection following a standout senior season.
Â
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career. The selection is also based on a student-athlete's athletic performance, as well as national and conference accolades.
Â
Parchment finished a strong freshman season with 280 kills, the third most on the team. She earned consecutive ACC Freshman of the Week honors to conclude the season, as the outside hitter tallied double-digit kills in each of her last six matches, averaging 4.93 kills per set in the final four matches of the year.Â
Â
The Kensington, Md., native put down 19 kills in NC State's 3-0 win against Syracuse, a team that advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, which were the second-most kills in a three-set match by an ACC player, most by a freshman and tied the rally-scoring era record for kills in a three-set match.
Â
More impressively, Parchment accomplished the feat against the conference's best blocking team as the Orange entered that contest ranked second in the nation with 3.07 blocks per set.Â
Â
She logged a season-high 21 kills in the Wolfpack's 3-1 win at Notre Dame, as the program earned its first-ever season sweep against the Fighting Irish. Parchment charted double-digit kills in 17 matches.
Â
In addition, she helped out defensively with 216 digs, the third highest on the team. Parchment logged 10 or more digs on nine occasions to notch seven double-double performances.
Â
She is a freshman majoring in management and compiled a 3.524 grade point average (GPA) during the fall semester.
Â
Despite switching positions nearly every season during her tenure with the Wolfpack, Sopitan tallied a career-high 391 kills to lead NC State as a senior outside hitter. The Laurel, Md., native was fourth in the ACC with that mark and was third in the conference with 3.62 kills per set.
Â
Her 391 kills are the third most in the rally-scoring era of the program for a single season. Sopitan tallied double-digit kills in nearly every match headlined by a career-best 21 in wins against Boston College and Duke.
Â
In a position that she had never played in her volleyball career, the senior proved to be one of the Pack's offensive options. She was also great defensively with a team-high 23 solo blocks, highlighted by a career-best five against Pittsburgh.Â
Â
For her career, Sopitan finished with 987 kills, only a few shy of reaching 1,000. She ended with the fourth-most kills in the rally-scoring era of program history.
Â
Headlined by 16 scholar-athletes and seven student-athletes named to the Dean's List, NC State volleyball turned in a stellar 2018 Fall Semester in the classroom.
Â
The Wolfpack compiled a 3.33 team GPA, highlighted by 12 student-athletes with a semester GPA better than 3.3 and seven with a GPA higher than 3.5.
Â
Additionally, seniors Makenzie Kuchmaner and Kassie Kasper along with freshman Pam Chukwujekwu earned a perfect 4.0 GPA for the 2018 fall semester.Â
Â
NC State ended the 2018 season with a 15-13 overall record and a 9-9 mark in ACC play. The Wolfpack finished the year strong by winning five of its six matches during the month of November.
Â
Three members of the Pack earned All-ACC honors at the conclusion of the season: Melissa Evans and Kylie Pickrell along with Sopitan. Click here for a recap of the 2018 season.
