GREENSBORO, N.C. – After a dominating weekend at home that saw the Wolfpack sweep the visiting Virginia Cavaliers, Kylee Alons, Holt Gray and Eric Knowles were honored as ACC Performers of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
It marks the third week in a row that NC State has had multiple swimmers and divers honored by the conference and the second week in a row that the Pack has swept the ACC Swimmer of the Week honors. Alons (ACC Women's Swimmer of the Week) and Gray (ACC Men's Diver of the Week) both garnered the honors for the second time this season, while this is Knowles' first ACC Men's Swimmer of the Week nod of his sophomore campaign and the first honors of his career.
Alons continued to build on her strong freshman season and finished the meet against Virginia as the Wolfpack's leading scorer for the second dual in a row. The Fort Collins, Colo. native opened the meet by setting a program record in the 200-yard butterfly after narrowly missing out on the school record a week ago. She took first place in the event in 1:57.03, an NCAA B cut time. Alons completed the sweep of the butterfly events with a top finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.93, and she also placed third in the 100-yard freestyle.
Knowles swept the distance events in the meet against the Cavaliers to tie in the lead for scoring for the Pack men. He started his outing by dropping the Wolfpack's fastest 1000-yard freestyle time of the season, touching the wall in 9:02.15 for the first-place finish. He went on to also take first in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:23.48.
Gray picked up a pair of podium finishes on both boards, including a win on the three-meter for the second straight meet. His three-meter score of 372.10 was not only good for first place but was also the third week in a row that he has posted an NCAA Zone score in the event. The Raleigh, N.C. native took second place on the one-meter, where he also tallied a Zone score of 330.60.
NC State's men and women will return to the pool this weekend as it heads to Austin, Texas for a tri-meet against No. 2/1 Texas and No. 13/21 Arizona. The meet is set to run Feb. 1-2 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, which is also the site for the upcoming 2019 NCAA Championships.
