Pack’s Comeback at Wake Forest Falls Short

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The 17th-ranked NC State men's basketball team overcame a 22-point deficit and tied the game midway through the second half but could not complete the comback, falling to Wake Forest, 71-67, Tuesday night inside the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
With the loss, NC State falls to 14-3 on the season and 2-2 in ACC action.
Torin Dorn led the Wolfpack in scoring for the seventh time this season, tallying a game-best 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting. A baseline jumper in the first half made the Wolfpack senior the 52nd player in program history to score 1,000 points in his NC State career. C.J. Bryce joined him in double figures with 17 points, 12 of those coming in the second half.
The Pack trailed by as many as 22 points (51-29) in the second half but used a 15-0 run that spanned over five minutes of the second half to tie the score at 58 with 7:46 remaining in the game.
After tying the score for the first time since the 12:01 mark of the first half, NC State went on to miss its next eight attempts from the field, and Wake Forest shot 5-of-6 from the free throw line over the final 3:09 to ice away the game.
The Wolfpack entered the game leading the ACC in field goal percentage (.507) but shot just 27-of-73 (.370) as a team Tuesday night, its worst shooting performance of the season.
NC State led by as many as six points early in the first half, but Wake Forest hit a pair of free throws at the 11:46 mark to take a 16-14 lead. The free throws started a 12-2 run by Wake Forest that built up a double-digit lead for the Demon Deacons.
A scoring drought for the Pack that lasted the final 4:20 of the first half gave Wake Forest a 42-27 lead at the half, the Wolfpack's biggest halftime deficit under head coach Kevin Keatts.
NC State outscored Wake Forest 40-29 in the second half and tied the score on one occasion in the final 20 minutes of play. Despite turning the ball over just nine times, NC State's second-fewest number of turnovers this season, the Pack could not regain a lead over the Demon Deacons.
The Pack continues its three-game road stint on Saturday afternoon as it travels to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. from the Joyce Center, and the matchup will be televised on Raycom.
