Wolfpack junior enjoying strong start to the season
NC State volleyball's Lauryn Terry has enjoyed a stellar start to the 2018 season and was recently named to the SMU DoubleTree Classic All-Tournament Team. The junior middle blocker has tallied 32 kills on the year with only six attacking errors to record a team-best .433 attacking percentage.
Â
The Columbia, Md., native has not committed more than two attacking errors in any match this year and has 25 kills with just four errors in her last four matches. Terry has also excelled defensively, as she leads the Pack with 12 blocks on the year.
Â
GoPack.com caught up with Terry to discuss her strong start, the improvements she has made from last season to this year and also hear her goals for the team and individually.
Â
What was working so well for you over the weekend?
"I think I was able to connect with Kylie, my setter, really well over the weekend to be an offensive threat and then my blocking was pretty good also. I also think I served well to score some points for my team, so I think I had a pretty good overall weekend."
Â
On the connection with setter Kylie Pickrell over the weekend?
"I think that's just the result of all the work that we put in during the preseason and also last season as well."
Â
How did it feel to make the all-tournament team?
"I wasn't even expecting it; it felt really good. It was one of those things that really make your day. I forgot that there was an all-tournament team until I got the notification on Twitter and found out that I was on the all-tournament team."
Â
As a junior now, how have you tried to be a leader for the middle blockers?
"I'm a veteran and I've played with this team for a few years now, so I know what it takes to be successful and what my role is and how I can play up to that role. I expect to get a kill and a block each time, but I also know how to move on to the next point and that's what I've been trying to show the younger players on the team as well."
Â
What has allowed you to be so successful offensively?
"I've come a long ways from where I was as a freshman or sophomore. I'm not thinking about making a mistake anymore, I'm just trying to be smart and figure out where I can place the ball to get a kill or get the other team out of system. I feel like I've developed this confidence and I know what I'm capable of and what I can do, so when I have a chance to touch the ball I try to play it in a way that benefits my team."
Â
What area do you think you've improved the most from last season?
"I think the area that I've improved the most is on the offensive end. We talk a lot about taking smarter shots and finding creative ways to score. I've been a lot more strategic on where I try to put the ball and my court awareness."
Â
What are you individual goals for the season and goals for the team?
"I want to fulfill my role as best I can to help meet the team goal of winning an ACC Championship, advancing to the NCAA Tournament and advancing further than we did last season.
Â
"Whatever comes along with that, if it's All-ACC or something like that, it's not at the forefront of my goals; I just want to be the best middle blocker I can for my team."
Â
What was it like to play in the NCAA Tournament last season?
"I really enjoyed the experience. We were in Austin, Texas, and I really love it there. To be able to play longer with my teammates was amazing and I would love to have that experience again this year. That's the goal."
