Pack Opens 2018 Fall Camp

RALEIGH, N.C. – A blanket of rain covering the Raleigh area was no problem for the Wolfpack on Friday, as Dave Doeren and company simply moved the first day of practice into the Close-King Indoor Practice Facility.
Doeren, entering his sixth season at the helm of the program, put his squad through a two-hour, fast-paced workout in helmets, but with no pads.
"It was good work," said Doeren. "We didn't put a lot of balls on the ground. I thought it was pretty clean.
"Without pads, it's hard to see how the defense has progressed since the spring," he continued. "There are so many fundamental skills that don't show up on a first day of practice.
Doeren was most pleased with the competitive level of the squad. "There is good competition. Guys know what their weakness were coming out of the spring, and we saw a lot of physical growth and gain since then. There is going to be some competition throughout training camp and our scrimmages."
Although the NC State is replacing 13 total starters, many players return who gained significant game experience in 2017 – when the Pack finished 9-4.
"You expect guys that played last year to be better this year, and we need that," said Doeren. "We need the guys that have a lot of game experience and that have made big plays to be better versions of themselves and allow some of those other guys that are trying to get a feel for it early to come in and get comfortable."
One of the main units the coaches are keeping on eye on is the defensive line. NC State lost all four starters from last year's squad, with all four being selected in the NFL Draft.
There is a mix of experience returning, but there are also many new faces: freshmen, 2017 redshirts and transfers.
"We challenged them this offseason to get around each other more," said Doeren. "They trained more together, they hung out more together, they went out to eat more together. You have to invest in each other as friends off the field as much as you do in practice and games."
The Pack will spend the afternoon in meetings and will have another walk-through tonight, then will return to the practice field Saturday morning.
Player news
• Doeren announced that transfer tight end Cary Angeline will miss the Wolfpack's first three games due to NCAA transfer rules. The 6'7 redshirt sophomore is practicing with the squad.
"He is probably the most versatile guy we have had, because he is a good in-line player and a guy you can move around," said Doeren. "I'm really excited he is here, we have huge hopes for him. He made some good catches today."
• Nickel Stephen Griffin sat out the practice.
"He should be back soon," said Doeren. "He had a lingering foot injury so we just want to progress him slowly. But we will get him back."
• DT Shug Frazier participated fully, but was in a yellow no-contact jersey.
"He injured his toe last year, so it's just the process of getting him back," said Doeren. "We don't want to rush him back too early, it takes time. We will get him back out there, but he will slowly progress."
