RALEIGH – The NC State Athletics Department welcomed its new student-athletes with the New Student-Athlete Orientation, which was held in the Talley Student Center Sunday.
All freshmen and transfers are expected to attend the event, which is designed to help create a smooth transition to life as a Wolfpack student-athlete. The day began with opening remarks from Director of Athletics Deborah A. Yow.
"We're glad you're here," Yow said. "It's going to be a great year. You've got a lot of support around you in this room."
The student-athletes then transitioned to a participatory session with visionary speaker Derek Greenfield. Dr. Greenfield spent his time with the newcomers with engaging discussions and entertaining activities designed to bring the community closer together in the spirit of inclusion and respect.
The orientation also included a large group session with Director of the Office of Student Conduct Thomas Hardiman, who covered community expectations as outlined in NC State's Code of Student Conduct.
During breakout sessions, the new student-athletes rotated between a series of discussions about various aspects of life at NC State. The day included a workshop on bystander intervention and a session on personal branding. The newcomers also had the opportunity to spend time with a panel of current student-athletes. The panel, presented by the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes (ASPSA) included discussion on resources available to NC State student-athletes, as well as strategies for a successful first semester and advice on transitioning to the Wolfpack student-athlete experience.
The Athletics Department will also hold its annual Welcome Back Pack Dinner Tuesday night to bring all of the student-athletes, coaches and support staffs together before the fall semester begins Wednesday.

A Wolfpack rendition of "Lean On Me" to start the day. Always a pleasure having @ProfessorDG in Raleigh! Excited to hear from him this morning as he discusses inclusion and respect. pic.twitter.com/5lYkRkTYoQ
