DURHAM, N.C. – The NC State men's soccer team fell 1-0 in a weather-delayed exhibition match at No. 10 Duke on Saturday evening inside Koskinen Stadium.
Duke opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Daniele Proch scored on a rebound from a corner. The midfielder was well positioned eight yards from goal and finished low and inside the right post to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
"I told the guys in the locker room that we saw some positive things but we also saw some things that we for sure have to work on," NC State head coach George Kiefer said. "It was Duke's third match (of the preseason) and it was our first match. It looked like our first match."
The Wolfpack had a strong second half, recording five shots and earning three corners in a late effort to equalize the match. David Loera had the Wolfpack's best chance of the match, hitting a tremendous shot on frame from 20 yards out in the 86th minute. Duke's Will Pulisic made a strong save to keep the Blue Devils in front.
Following the 90 minutes of regulation, the teams came out for a planned 20 additional minutes. Inclement weather in the area cut this segment short after six minutes of action.
NC State begins the 2018 regular season at home on Friday, August 24 against USC Upstate. Kickoff is set for 7 pm from Dail Soccer Stadium.
