GREENSBORO, N.C. – Distance runner Erika Kemp and swimmer Alexia Zevnik have been selected to represent the Atlantic Coast Conference as nominees for the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, the league office announced Thursday.
The award is given annually to a graduating female student-athlete who has distinguished herself throughout her collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.
Kemp concluded her Wolfpack career with a stellar track and field season during which she won a bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the ACC Outdoor Championships, placed first in regional qualifying in the 5,000 meters and earned All-America honors in the 5,000 meters at the 2018 NCAA Championships.
A native of Mount Holly, New Jersey, Kemp earned the seventh All-ACC Academic selection of her track and field career to conclude the 2018 outdoor season and was selected as an ACC Postgraduate Scholarship recipient earlier this year. She earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in foreign literature and language, as well as psychology, and also minored in statistics. Kemp compiled a 3.74 cumulative grade point average during her undergraduate career and was recognized as a USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree a total of six times across track and field and cross country.
While at NC State, Kemp served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and the Captain's Council and was a member in the Wolfpack Leadership Academy.
Zevnik capped off her collegiate athletic career in 2017 with a multitude of honors, including ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Most Valuable Swimmer at the ACC Championships. She finished her undergraduate academic studies this past spring.
A team captain, Zevnik captured three individual gold medals in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley at the 2017 ACC Championships. She also won titles in the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relays. Zevnik went on to secure two top-10 finishes at the 2017 NCAA finals and emerged as the team's top scorer.
Zevnik, who is from Lasalle, Canada, double majored in biological sciences and business administration, posting a 3.79 cumulative grade point average on the way to being named a CSCAA Scholar All-American four times.
In addition to her athletic and academic work, Zevnik was involved in C.A.R.E. For Animals and Habitat for Humanity. She also took part in Read Across America and Swim for Life.
Kemp and Zevnik were selected from a strong list of ACC nominees following a vote of the league's 15 member schools. From the group of conference nominees, the top 10 will be chosen from each NCAA division in September. The selection committee will then determine the top three from each division to make up the final nine finalists. The national winner will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year awards event on Oct. 28 in Indianapolis.
