RALEIGH, N.C. - Alexis Galarneau will begin play at the 2018 NCAA Singles Championships as he meets Nicolas Moreno de Alboran of UC Santa Barbara in the first round Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. All of the matches for the singles tournament will be played at the Wake Forest Tennis Center in Winston Salem, N.C.
Galarneau concluded the regular season ranked No. 43 after maintaining a spot in the top 50 for the entirety of the 2017-18 season. A First Team All-ACC honoree, the Wolfpack sophomore will make his first career appearance in the tournament. Galarneau took down seven ranked opponents in the spring, including victories against Duke's No. 25 Nicolas Alvarez and Minnesota's No. 35 Stefan Milicevic.
Moreno de Alboran, who was named the Big West Conference Player of the Year, enters the matchup with a 28-10 overall record on the 2017-18 season. The junior earned two wins over ranked opponents during the season, primarily playing at the No. 1 singles spot, and he is currently ranked a season-best No. 67. The match will mark the first meeting between Galarneau and Moreno de Alboran.
With a win over Moreno de Alboran, Galarneau would advance to the second round to face the winner of the match between No. 1 seed Martin Redlicki of UCLA and Tim Sandkaulen of Mississippi. That second round match would be played Thursday.
The NCAA Singles Championships will run from May 23-28, with one round of action played per day. The individual national champion will be crowned on May 28.
