RALEIGH – NC State women's soccer head coach Tim Santoro has once again put together a challenging schedule for the 2018 fall season. Of the 20 matches on the Wolfpack's schedule, including its exhibition match with UNC-Chapel Hill, 10 of the teams reached the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Four of those teams reached the Sweet 16, one advanced to the Elite Eight and two were College Cup semifinalists.
Seven teams on the slate finished in the top 25 of last year's final RPI (rating percentage index), while the average RPI of the teams NC State will face is 73.
"We have another very tough schedule but are really looking forward to it," said Santoro. "Besides half our matches being NCAA teams, we've got a great variety of teams from the Big 10, Atlantic 10, AAC, Ivy League and Patriot League. The 10 games in the top women's soccer conference in the country are always the biggest test, especially with us having to play an extra away game compared to our competition. But whatever, we'll be ready. It's this type of schedule the last few years that's prepared us for ACC and NCAA tournaments."
The Pack will host UNC-Chapel Hill in an exhibition Aug. 8 before formally opening up its season at Navy Aug. 16.
The team will open its home schedule with a three-match home stand when it welcomes Monmouth (Aug. 20), East Carolina (Aug. 23) and College Cup semifinalist South Carolina (Aug. 26). Other nonconference opponents include: Pennsylvania, Princeton, George Washington, Nebraska and UNCG.
Due to scheduling conflicts on campus the Pack will play six ACC games on the road. The conference schedule is typically formatted with five at home and five away. NC State will welcome Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, Miami and Louisville to Dail Stadium and travel to Notre Dame, Duke, Syracuse, Boston College, Florida State and Virginia.
The program's Alumni Weekend will be held Sept. 21-23 and Oct. 21 has been tabbed as Senior Day.
Last year the team finished with a 15-5-2 record, the most wins since 1995. The season was highlighted by its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance when the team advanced to the second round. In ACC play the Pack finished third in the regular season standings with a 6-3-1 record and an ACC Tournament semifinal appearance, the program's best showing since 1995.
