Â
RALEIGH – NC State men's soccer assistant coach Samuel Castellanos has been hired as the head coach of the New York Red Bulls U-18/19 team.
Â
Castellanos spent one season in Raleigh on George Kiefer's coaching staff in 2017. The Wolfpack achieved a number of firsts during this season, qualifying for its first NCAA Championship since 2009 and hosting an ACC Championship match at Dail Soccer Stadium for the first time in program history. Despite a preseason prediction of 11th, the Wolfpack tied for seventh in the ACC standings and defeated two top-five teams throughout the year.
Â
"I'm very excited for this opportunity for Sammy to join NYRB and thank him for his help in restoring the tradition at NC State," Kiefer said.
Â
Prior to his time at NC State, Castellanos served as an elite development coach for the Orando City Soccer Club's U-16/18 side.
Â
Castellanos spent time at USF with Kiefer as both a player and staff member. The midfielder played his last two collegiate seasons with the Bulls after transferring from Rutgers. Castellanos helped the Bulls to a 2005 BIG EAST regular-season championship and a runner-up finish in the BIG EAST tournament. Following an appearance in the 2005 NCAA Tournament second round, Castellanos helped the Bulls to a 9-6-4 mark during the 2006 season.
Â
Castellanos served as an assistant coach at Philadelphia University from 2010-11 before joining USF on the sideline. In his first season as an assistant with USF (2011), Castellanos helped lead the Bulls to their second BIG EAST Red Division title and their third NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearance. His 2012 and 2013 seasons working under Kiefer at USF were also quite successful, as the Bulls posted a 16-10-14 record and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in both years, reaching the second round in 2012.
