3/9/2018 11:07:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Prior to coming to NC State in 2014 Earnshaw accumulated a record of 747-118 at Armstrong State as he went 411-35 with the women's team and 325-11 with the men's team. Since coming to NC State in 2014 he has a 53-46 record, with the Pack's win over South Dakota being the 800th of his career.
From the Coach
"Long day at the courts today and obviously nice to achieve a milestone" said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "Anytime this happens it makes you reflect on everyone involved and I'm more than thankful to have had countless people go above and beyond throughout my career to help me on this journey. None of this could have happened without the hard work and dedication of all the players I've had the opportunity to work with, this number of wins is a reflection on them, they are the ones that hit the ball not me.
On the day I certainly would have preferred to reach the milestone it in the days first match against Oklahoma. Really mixed emotions from that standpoint. We've really struggled to find some leadership and consistency this spring, where this generally impacts your bottom line is when the chips are down in the close matches. Credit to Oklahoma, they never stopped fighting and were able to turn around at least half a dozen situations where we didn't take advantage of leads. Technically we had four straight match points for the whole match at No. 3 singles, but more than that we didn't convert and got out of our game plans continually when it mattered most. Often a season can be defined with whether the close matches go your way or not. I'm not a believer in luck being a factor in these outcomes, everything happens for a reason and we've got to take a strong look at ourselves and start asking one another more demanding questions on a daily basis in order to raise our standards. Tough, tough loss emotionally but this is where character counts and we were able to get the job done in the evening match against South Dakota. Now the focus shifts squarely back to ACC play and I'm sure there are going to be more close matches ahead of us, that's how it is in this league.
