Wolfpack student-athlete enjoys strong finish to a great career
CHARLESTON, S.C. – NC State's Lauren Phillips concluded her collegiate career with a strong performance at the NCAA Rifle Championships on Friday, as she finished 12th in the individual standings of the smallbore competition held inside McAlister Field House on The Citadel's campus.
She fired a score of 582, just two points shy of advancing to the finals session in smallbore.
"It's been a great experience coaching Lauren and watching her shoot these past two years," said head coach Keith Miller. "While many shooters work hard for every point on the line, I've never coached someone who so fiercely fights for every single point. She's a true competitor who always gives it her all. She surely made her mark in Wolfpack Rifle history."
The Seabeck, Wash., native started strong in the event with a score of 98 on her first series and a 97 in her second series in the kneeling position. Phillips charted scores of 98 and 99 in prone, while closing out smallbore with a 94 and a 96 in the standing position.
Phillips was named a Second Team All-Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) selection in smallbore this season and also collected the honor in air rifle. Last year, she was the GARC Champion in smallbore.
She is a four-time All-American and an eight-time all-conference selection by the GARC.
NC State had a student-athlete selected to compete in the NCAA Championships for three consecutive seasons. The Wolfpack finished the season with an overall record of 11-7, narrowly missing the NCAA Championships as a team.
