RALEIGH – The NC State men's tennis team did not drop a set in singles play on the way to defeating Elon 6-1 Friday evening at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Wolfpack improved to 5-0 on the season for the first time since 2007, when NC State opened its season with eight wins in a row.
"Our doubles is still a work in progress," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "Credit to Elon for coming out and playing a really good, aggressive doubles point. I'm just really proud of the guys. We're building an identity with this team, and it's really important to these guys when we put the uniform on to fight for every point for their team and for the school. You see that out here in every single match."
The doubles decision was a tight one, coming down to the final court. Alexis Galarneau and Tadas Babelis paired up for the first time this season to earn a convincing 6-2 win over Elon's Felipe Sarrasague and Salvador Mijares on court one.
Despite fighting back from an early deficit, Georgiy Malyshev and Collin Shick dropped their match on court three. The Phoenix duo of Camilo Ponce and Taylor Foote edged the Wolfpack pair 6-3.
The opening point came down to a tiebreaker on court one between NC State's Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic and Elon's Neal Port and Mario Paccini. The duos traded breaks in the middle of the match but then remained on serve to head into the buster, which Port and Paccini won 7-5.
Babelis notched NC State's first match of the evening in dominant fashion, defeating Kyle Frankel 6-1, 6-2 on court three. The Wolfpack freshman capped off his performance with a strong service game and an ace on match point.
Malyshev picked up a win on court four to remain a perfect 5-0 in singles play on the season and to put the Pack ahead in the match. Playing against Elon's Ponce, Malyshev cruised through his first set 6-0 and came back from an early three-game deficit in the second set to take it 7-5.
On court one, Galarneau put NC State a match away from clinching with his victory over Sarrasague. He took the first set 6-2 and ended his match with back-to-back breaks to take the second frame 7-5.
Igor's tremendous fight against Elon's Paccini on court two captured the match in favor of the Wolfpack. Paccini held a 4-2 advantage in the opening set, but the Wolfpack junior fired off four-straight games to win the set 6-4. He grabbed the second set by the same score.
Ivan added to NC State's score, besting Felipe Osses-Konig by a score of 6-2, 6-0 on court five, and Robert Turzak ended the Wolfpack's day with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jacob Bicknell on court six to put the final match score at 6-1.
