RESULTS
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The NC State men's swimming team had an impressive opening day at the ACC Men's Swimming Championships as it earned gold in the 800 freestyle relay for the fifth-consecutive year and silver in the 200 medley relay Wednesday inside the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Team Standings
After one day of competition, NC State sits in sixth-place with 185 points. Duke sits atop the standings with 292 points, Florida State sits second with 291 and Virginia Tech is third with 275 points.
Wolfpack Relays
For the fifth-straight year the Wolfpack won the 800 freestyle relay; the foursome of Andreas Vazaios, Ryan Held, Anton Ipsen and Justin Ress clocked in at an NCAA 'A' standard qualifying time of 6:12.92 seconds to take first.
In the 200 medley relay the team of Coleman Stewart, Jacob Molacek, Giovanni Izzo and Cobe Garcia took second in a time of 1:23.93 seconds.
200 Butterfly Time Trial
Competing in the 200 butterfly time-trial, James Bretscher posted the third-fastest 200 butterfly time in ACC history, touching the wall at 1:41.62 seconds.
Quoting the Coach
"It was a pretty good session for the Wolfpack," said head coach Braden Holloway. "You know, it's never easy taking defeat to kind of start the meet and we switched around our relay to rearrange our lineup and we just need to execute that relay better for us to get the result that we want. But, you know, all in all some pretty decent splits on it. Coleman Stewart, the fastest 50 backstroke split in history was a great start for him leading off that relay. The guys battled back in the 800 free relay and had a really good swim and Anton Ipsen was the new guy on that relay and held his own and did what he needed to do. The end of the free relay was a nice one for us, get some momentum back on our side. Probably the swim of the night was a time trial by James Bretscher. That was the third-fastest in the history of the ACC behind two other NC State guys. It was good. He was good and that time should make NCAAs, so I'm glad we did the time trial when he's fresh, because it's the last day of the meet when he swims his best event and he's a little bit more tuckered out. We got the momentum back on our side and obviously it's going to be a pretty big battle this week and we just have to take it event by event and do what we can and come in swinging tomorrow morning.
