Wolfpack sends a student-athlete to championships for third consecutive season
INDIANAPOLIS – For the third consecutive season, the NC State rifle team will be represented at the NCAA Championships as graduate student Lauren Phillips has been selected to compete in smallbore. The 2018 event will be held March 9-10 at McAlister Field House and hosted by The Citadel.
Â
The smallbore portion of the championships will take place on Friday, March 9. Phillips is one of four individual qualifiers in smallbore, as she will be joined by Navy's Kestrel Kuhne, Memphis' Levi Clark and Joe Martin of UT Martin.
Â
"I'm so happy for Lauren to make the NCAA's in her final year of competition," said head coach Keith Miller. "Her graduate school schedule and internship leave her very little time for training, so she's become a model of efficiency and effectiveness.
"She trained hard all summer, getting herself poised for the season. Since classes started, she's done a great job of maintaining her level of performance. Part of her work is on the range, but she augments that with mental training. The combination has kept her at the top of her game throughout the season.
Â
Phillips led the Wolfpack in the smallbore competition during the season with a 581.23 average, highlighted by a season-high score of 588 in the event against No. 3 Kentucky.
"She's a true competitor that knows what she needs, and trains to peak at the right time. I'm looking forward to being with her as she closes out a stellar collegiate career. No doubt, she is leaving her mark on NC State!"
Â
Unfortunately, the Wolfpack was not selected to compete in the NCAA Championships as a team. NC State will next be in action this weekend at the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships hosted by West Virginia.
