"Obviously, Akela Maize and Chelsea Nelson mean so much to this program, both as players and as people," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "It's tough seeing them leave. (It was) their final home game, possibly. And then Play4Kay is special wherever you go, but it's really, really special here at NC State because of Coach Yow's legacy here and all that she's done, not only for NC State and the state of North Carolina, but also for cancer research. She continues to touch lives."
"I'm proud of the way we bounced back after the first quarter. We didn't have a good answer for (Elisa) Penna. What a performance she put on. (Offensively), we shot the ball decent. I'm a little disappointed in our rebounding. We've been doing a great job in that area, so we kind of took a little step back. Good win, and now two road games to go."
Penna keyed Wake Forest (12-15, 4-10 ACC) to a hot start in the first quarter, as she hit all three of her three-point attempts and helped the Demon Deacons out to an 18-17 lead at the first quarter intermission. The Demon Deacons at one point led by nine points in the opening frame.
The teams traded leads throughout the first portion of the second quarter before NC State claimed the lead for the final time when Nelson scored down low to make it 35-33 with 1:56 remaining in the first half. The Wolfpack would extend its advantage to six points (40-34) by the halftime break.
NC State scored 18 of the first 22 points in the third quarter to take a commanding 60-38 advantage with 2:55 remaining in the period. In the fourth quarter, the Demon Deacons were able to use a late run to trim NC State's lead to 11 points (72-61) with 2:04 left in the game, but they would come no closer as NC State closed out the victory.
NC State now takes to the road for its final two games of the regular season. The Wolfpack will next play at Pittsburgh on Thursday, Feb. 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
