GREENSBORO, N.C. — Day one of the ACC Women's Swimming & Diving and Men's Diving Championships was filled with highlights for NC State as the Wolfpack defended its 200 medley relay title and James Brady set a new program record on the three-meter board Wednesday inside the Greensboro Aquatic Center
Along with Brady's program record, the Wolfpack also earned NCAA 'A' standard qualifying times in both relays.
Wolfpack Relays
The team of Elise Haan, Anna Shumate, Krista Duffield and Lexie Lupton posted the third-fastest time in program history, 1:36.07 seconds, to successfully defend the Wolfpack's title in the 200 medley relay. Along with etching themselves into the record book and finishing first, they also earned an NCAA 'A' standard qualifying time. Haan, Shumate, Duffield and Lupton now hold the fifth-fastest time in the nation in the 200 medley relay.
In the 800 freestyle relay the team of Lexie Lupton, Haan, Hannah Moore and Julia Poole completed the race in an NCAA 'A' qualifying time of 7:03.63 seconds to finish third. The quartet's mark was also the third-fastest time in program history.
Diving
James Brady had a stellar day on the 3-meter board as he set a new program record and finished third thanks to his score of 402.35. After finishing 23rd last season at the ACC Championships, Brady improved his finish by an impressive 20 positions. In the prelim, Holt Gray finished 13th with a mark of 311.40 and Stewart Spanbaeur finished 26th with a total of 261.35.
On the one-meter board, Madeline Kline moved up five spots from last season to finish 10th with a score of 255.10. Bailey Revels finished 36th with a score of 175.00.
From the Coaches
Head Coach Braden Holloway
"I think we started off on a really good note," said Holloway. "Our foursome in that relay has kind of changed throughout the years and we felt we could put together a really good relay. When you have a great leadoff leg like we did from Elise then you hand it off to Anna Shumate, who is a freshman and handled her nerves really well, and let some veterans bring it home it made for a really great start for us. It was a great win for our women's team. The 800 free relay was a pretty solid relay, it was not lights out but it was pretty consistent for all four legs. On the boards we had a great day; James Brady was 23rd last year and moved up to third today. Ready to get back to work tomorrow."
Diving Coach Yahya Radman
"Today was a really good day for our diving team," said Radman. "Madeline came out of the gate swinging; a lot of ups and downs on her end in terms of placing round-to-round but her diving was very consistent. At the end she was just out-talented by two spots but the writing is on the wall; she can be a contender in years to come. It's a matter of her buying into herself. As for the men's side, I'm very proud of Stew for clawing his way back from two very rough days and that's putting it lightly, and a very strong debut from Holt who put up some big points for the team. As a freshman working through his nerves, he was able to finish in a very aggressive scoring position. By far the highlight of the night came from James Brady who was steady-eddy with a very simple list but hands down, one of the most competitive competitions I've been a part of and one of the most competitive meets I've ever seen. Setting a school record and going toe-toe with some of the best in our conference, our zone and arguably the country, James is in very elite company. I'm excited to see what the rest of the week holds; we are off on the right foot. Going forward from here I'm very optimistic and excited to see what the future holds for us."
Team Standings
After the first day of competition the Wolfpack is tied for fifth with Notre Dame as both teams have 135 points. UNC-Chapel sits first with 151 points, Virginia finished second with 143 points while Duke is third with 139 points to round out the top-three.
