KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Sophomore David Loera of the NC State men's soccer team earned a place on the First Team of the United Soccer Coaches Division I Men's All-South Region Team, the organization announced recently.
A midfielder for the Wolfpack, Loera started all 20 matches, was on the field for 1,835 of the season's 1,872 minutes (97 percent), scored three goals, and led the team with seven assists en route to earning a First Team All-ACC honor in November. All three of Loera's goals were match-winners, as he scored in victories against Longwood, No. 1 UNC-Chapel Hill, and Boston College in the first round of the 2018 ACC Championship. Loera was named ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15 and TopDrawerSoccer National Player of the Week on Oct. 16.
Throughout his NC State career, Loera has started all 38 of the team's matches, scoring four goals and contributing 12 assists. He has registered 52 total shots, 28 of which have been on target. At the end of the 2017 season, he was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team, the College Soccer News All-Freshman Third Team, and the TopDrawerSoccer Freshman Best XI Second Team.
Loera is the second Wolfpack player to earn United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Team honors in the two completed seasons since George Kiefer and his staff took over in Raleigh. Classmate Manny Perez earned a spot on the Second Team at the conclusion of the 2017 season.
NC State's season ended after the Wolfpack achieved many milestones in 2018. The team qualified for its second consecutive NCAA Championship for the first time since the 1991 and 1992 seasons. The Wolfpack earned its first NCAA Championship victory (Nov. 15 over Campbell) since 1994. NC State also posted an unbeaten 8-0-3 mark in Raleigh and recorded its first 10-win season since 2012.
