
What @PackWrestle is Thankful For This Holiday Season

Here is a list of some of the exciting achievements we had in 2018:
• For the first time in NCAA history, a Division 1 NCAA dual was held outside North America when #5 NC State faced #3 Oklahoma State in Naples, Italy. The dual, dubbed "Tussle for the Troops" took place from the Naples Naval Base, and both teams won five matches but a pair of bonus point wins gave the Cowboys the win.

• For the first time in ACC history, NC State 'Set the Stage' and had a raised mat for a pair of duals in 2018. The first time was against UNC, resulting in a 26-7 win, and more recently last time out the Pack once again set up the stage and defeated #11 Nebraska, 18-17. The two duals averaged 2,020 fans.
• NC State finished a perfect 5-0 in ACC duals in 2018, outscoring foes 132-44. The Pack finished undefeated in ACC dual action for the first time since 2000, and claimed the ACC Dual Championship for the first time since 2004.

• With 3,905 fans packing Reynolds, NC State set an all-time high for attendance in a dual vs. #2 Ohio State.

• For the third straight season, NC State finished in the top-10 in the final NWCA/USA Today Coaches' Poll. After a 15-2 campaign, the Wolfpack finished the regular season ranked No. 6 nationally.

• At the 2018 ACC Championship, NC State claimed three individual titles and placed second as a team – the third straight year placing amongst the top-two.
• NC State had nine NCAA Qualifiers and a school-record seven seeded wrestlers at the 2018 NCAA Championships.

• NC State brought home its third national championship over the past five seasons, as R-Sr. Michael Macchiavello won the 197-pound weight class in an All-ACC final.
• A lot of school-bests were accomplished at the 2018 NCAA Championships: NC State and ACC-best fourth place team finish, ACC record two NCAA finalists, NC State records of three semifinalists and four All-Americans.

• Michael Macchiavello was named the 2018 ACC Wrestler of the Year, while Wolfpack head coach Pat Popolizio was named the 2018 ACC Coach of the Year. Popolizio was also named the 2018 Dan Gable co-NCAA Coach of the Year.

• Macchiavello was also named the 2018 ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year. NC State also had five named a NWCA Academic All-American: Macchiavello, Daniel Bullard, Sean Fausz, Brian Hamann and Hayden Hidlay.

• The NC State Board of Trustees approved a new contract for head coach Pat Popolizio, a new seven-year contract that runs through June 2025.

• In an effort to continue to be one of the top training centers in the country for wrestling, the Wolfpack Regional Training Center (RTC) announced an expanded roster of athletes that will be training full-time in Raleigh at NC State University.

• After redshirting the 2017-18 season, Nick Reenan placed first at 86 kg at the 2018 World Team Trials Challenge in Rochester, Minnesota. With the win, he advanced to the Final X and took on World Champion David Taylor in a best-of-three final.
• Two members of the Wolfpack Wrestling Club claimed top honors in their weight class at the U23 World Team Trials in Akron, Ohio. Hayden Hidlay won the Gold at 70 kg, while Michael Macchiavello won the 92 kg weight class. In total, five from NC State earned All-American honors.

• NC State added another top recruiting class, as the Wolfpack's 2018 signing class consisted of 17 prep signees and one All-American transfer. The group tallied a consensus top-six ranking nationally in four different publications. InterMat ranked the Wolfpack's recruiting class No. 3 nationally, WIN Magazine tabbed it No. 4, and both FloWrestling and TheOpenMat ranked the Pack's haul No. 6.

• After winning his Final X matchup and advancing to the U.S. World Team, Nick Gwiazdowski won a World bronze medal for the second straight year at the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
• Teammates Sean Fausz (61 kg) and Hayden Hidlay (70 kg) both traveled to Romania to compete at the U-23 World Championships. Fausz advanced to the finals and brought home a silver medal.

• NC State had five wrestlers combined to win eight ACC Wrestler of the Week honors, including R-So. Nick Reenan who has been named each of the past two weeks.

• The #PackMentality Pop-Ins Podcasts continues to be the lone podcast produced by NC State Athletics and the lone podcast in all of college wrestling that is both hosted and produced by a school. There were 26 new episodes in 2018 featuring NCAA National Champions, WWE Hall of Famers, MMA World Champions along with both current and past members of the Wolfpack.
