December 2, 2018
RALEIGH – The 13th-ranked NC State women's basketball team (8-0) continued its terrific start to the season with a one-sided 85-56 victory over visiting Old Dominion Sunday afternoon on Kay Yow Court at James T. Valvano Arena inside Reynolds Coliseum.
NC State held a narrow 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter but outscored Old Dominion 56-21 over the next 18:49 to take a commanding 70-33 lead with 1:11 remaining in the third quarter. During this middle stretch of the game, NC State held Old Dominion to 8-39 (.205) shooting from the field while operating at a very efficient 21-36 (.583).
Grace Hunter led all scorers with 21 points on 9-16 shooting. She also collected 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. She was joined in double figures by 14 points from both Aislinn Konig and Armani Hawkins. Konig was a very efficient 4-5 from three-point range to continue her streak of hitting at least one three-pointer in 41 consecutive games. Senior DD Rogers also pulled down 10 rebounds in the winning effort.
Old Dominion was led offensively by 17 points from Maggie Robinson. She was joined in double figures by Ann Jernigan's 12 points. Ajah Wayne led all players with 15 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive end.
Postgame Notes
-Old Dominion never led on Sunday. NC State led for 36:57.
-NC State is 9-4 vs. ODU in Raleigh and 22-14 overall.
-Freshman Jada Rice scored her first career point in the win.
-NC State is 36-4 on its home court since the renovation of Reynolds Coliseum.
"I was worried about how we'd come out after a nice win over Michigan on Thursday night," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "Sure enough, we were a little bit sluggish. I thought Old Dominion did a great job of attacking us. We knew their guards were going to be tough matchups: they are really quick to the rim off the bounce. We knew that was going to be a good challenge for us."
"We probably have a lot of film clips we can show the team where we need to do a better job of guarding, keeping our man in front of us, and helping in the gaps. That said, in the second quarter and third quarter I thought we had some good runs, knocked down some shots, and got a few stops. We gave up a ton of offensive rebounds, which is concerning, so there are plenty of things we can clean up, but we are thankful to get a W and move on."
NC State closes out its current three-game home stand on Wednesday, Dec. 5 when Hampton comes to Raleigh. Tip-off between the Wolfpack and Pirates is scheduled for 10:30 am for NC State's Education Day in partnership with the Wake County Public School System.
