HANGZHOU, China– Ryan Held picked up his third world record and third gold medal of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) Friday as he took first place as part of Team USA's men's 4x50-meter freestyle relay squad.
Held teamed up with Caeleb Dressel, Jack Conger and Michael Chadwick to set a new world record of 1:21.80 in the event, clipping the previous world record that had been held by Russia since 2014. Held swam a 20.25 split in the second leg of the race, the fastest split across all swimmers in the event, to help lead the United States men to the win and the world's fastest time.
The NC State swimming alumnus has now been a part of three of the United States' gold medal-winning relay teams, with all three of those first-place finishes coming in world record time. Held anchored the winning 4x100-meter freestyle relay team that set a new world record in 3:03.03 on Tuesday, and he went on to swim as a member of the United States' winning 4x50-meter mixed freestyle relay squad on Wednesday.
Team USA has won a total of 10 gold medals at the international meet with two more days of action on the table. The World Championships continue Saturday and Sunday with the final days of competition in Hangzhou.
