RALEIGH – NC State men's tennis head coach Kyle Spencer announced the team's captains for the 2019 season, tabbing seniors Georgiy Malyshev and Michael Ogden and junior Alexis Galarneau for the honor.
"Alexis, Georgiy and Michael were selected by the team and supported by the coaching staff to help maintain the core values of our tennis program on a daily basis," said Spencer. "Each of the three captains brings their own distinct leadership traits to our program each day. I look forward to what this season has in store for our team."
The Wolfpack captains bring a wealth of playing experience into the upcoming spring season, as all three men saw action in at least 22 of the Pack's 26 dual matches during the 2018 campaign. They have also displayed strong leadership qualities both on and off the court, demonstrating the team's 'Pack Rising'' motto that focuses on elevating all aspects of the program and its members.
Galarneau enjoyed a historic sophomore campaign in 2017-18 during which he reached a program-best No. 16 ITA ranking on two occasions during the season. During the fall, he became the first player in program history to reach the quarterfinals at the ITA All-American Championships, and he followed up with a strong spring season which ended in a berth at the 2018 NCAA Singles Championships, the first individual postseason appearance of his career. A First Team All-ACC honoree in 2018, Galarneau took down 10 ranked opponents over the course of last season. He was also recognized for his success in the classroom as a member of the 2018 All-ACC Academic Team.
Malyshev started in both singles and doubles in all of the Wolfpack's dual matches during the 2018 season. He posted a team-best 9-1 doubles record in ACC competition and picked up victories in 10 of his final 11 completed doubles matches of the season. Malyshev also posted 20 singles wins on the season, with 13 of those coming in the spring.
Ogden remained a consistent factor in the Wolfpack's doubles play. Pairing up with Galarneau for the majority of the 2017-18 season, Ogden represented the Pack in the main doubles draws at both the ITA All-American Championships and the ITA National Fall Championships. Ogden was honored as an All-ACC Academic Team member and an ITA Scholar Athlete at the end of last season.
Galarneau, Malyshev and Ogden each played a part in helping the Wolfpack to a 17-9 record in 2018, highlighted by four wins against opponents that were ranked at the time of play. Seven of the Pack's wins during the spring season came against opponents that were ranked in the season-ending top 50, and NC State did not fall outside of the top 30 once it entered the rankings in February.
The three men were also instrumental in leading the Pack to major academic honors at the conclusion of the 2017-18 school year. The squad won the Chancellor's Cup, recognizing the highest GPA across all men's teams at NC State, and the Wolfpack was also honored as an ITA All-Academic Team.
