Accomplished student-athlete to join Wolfpack from Texas
RALEIGH, N.C. – First-year NC State rifle head coach Emily Holsopple announced Thursday that Makenzie Sheffield has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to join the Wolfpack Rifle program starting with the 2019-2020 academic year.
Â
"I'm so excited that Makenzie has chosen to join the Wolfpack," said Holsopple. "She brings a level of competitiveness and passion for the sport that I believe is critical as we start to build this new era. Her work ethic and drive will definitely help our team."
Â
A native of Granbury, Texas, Sheffield is an accomplished prep shooter. She was a member of the National Champion Granbury High School JROTC program, which set the National Record with a team score of 4689 at the 2018 JROTC Three-Position Air Rifle National Championship.
Â
Sheffield placed fourth in the individual standings at the championships to earn the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Distinguished Shooting Badge, the equivalent of being named a High School All-American.
Â
She helped the Granbury JROTC Program also win the 2018 Junior Air Rifle National Championships hosted by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. Sheffield claimed third place in the individual precision portion of the event, while the team earned third in the precision team standings and third in smallbore as a program.
Â
The Wolfpack commit garnered seventh place at the CMP National Air Rifle Championships this year.
Â
In 2017, Sheffield guided Granbury to the Texas State JROTC Air Rifle Championships, highlighted by a second-place finish in the individual competition.
Â
She has qualified for the USA Junior Olympics in each of the past two years and finished third in the Junior Women's Air Rifle event in 2017.
Â
A standout student and member of her community, Sheffield is an A/B Honor Roll student and is involved with FFA and 4-H. For multiple years, she has served as a Parker County Ambassador through the 4-H Program.
Â
Sheffield is the youngest of three children with two older brothers and loves photography.
Â
NC State has wrapped up the fall portion of its slate and returns to action on Jan. 19 against Navy.
