HANGZHOU, China– NC State swimming alumnus Ryan Held put together an impressive first day of competition at the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), as he helped the United States win gold in the men's 4x100-meter freestyle relay in a new world record time.
Teaming up with Caeleb Dressel, Blake Pieroni, and Michael Chadwick, Held anchored the winning relay team in 45.76 to not only to take the win for Team USA but also to secure a new world record time of 3:03.03. The time broke the previous mark of 3:03.30, which stood as the world record in the event since 2009.
Held started his outing at the Short Course World Championships by setting an American record with his lead-off time in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay prelims. The Springfield, Ill. native was the fastest lead-off swimmer across all heats with a 45.82 leg that broke the existing American record (46.25).
In the finals, all four of the United States' relay swimmers went on to record times that clocked in well under that original American record on their way to winning gold. Dressel's lead-off time in the finals re-set the 100-meter freestyle American record that Held notched in the prelims.
The Wolfpack will be back in the pool tonight for the second day of preliminary heats. Action resumes at 8:30 p.m. EST, where NC State sophomore Tamila Holub is set to represent Portugal in the 800-meter freestyle.
