RALEIGH – The 17th-ranked NC State women's basketball team began a season with a perfect 4-0 record for the eighth straight year on Sunday afternoon by defeating visiting Radford 75-58 on Kay Yow Court inside Reynolds Coliseum. The win was NC State's 22nd consecutive non-conference home win, a streak that dates back to December 2015.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair that featured seven lead changes in the opening 17:05, but once NC State took a 25-24 advantage with 2:55 remaining in the second quarter, the Highlanders did not reclaim an advantage the rest of the way. NC State led by 13 points (38-25) with 8:07 remaining in the third quarter and withstood a 17-4 Radford run that tied the game at 42 points apiece with 3:23 remaining in the third quarter. The Wolfpack closed out the quarter by scoring 15 of the next 20 points to take a 10-point advantage into the fourth stanza and never allowed the Highlanders any closer than eight points during the rest of the game.
Freshman center Elissa Cunane led all players with 23 points on 7-16 shooting and an impressive 9-11 success rate from the free-throw line. She was joined in double figures by 14 points from both Aislinn Konig and Kiara Leslie. Leslie pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds to earn her second double-double of the season. Guard Grace Hunter also had a terrific day on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds.
Radford's Destinee Walker led the way for the Highlanders with 15 points. Teammate Savannah Felgemacher led all players with 15 rebounds.
Postgame Notes
-NC State now leads the series with Radford 3-0.
-The Wolfpack outscored the Highlanders 36-18 in the paint.
-NC State out-rebounded Radford 41-34 and has won the rebounding battle in all four games this season.
-At 16-19 (.842), NC State shot its best percentage of the season from the charity stripe.
-Konig has hit at least one three-pointer in 37 consecutive games and made at least four for the third time this season.
-For the second straight game, all 12 available Wolfpack players saw action on the court during the win.
"Tip your hat to Radford," NC State head coach Wes Moore said after the game. "They are predicted to win their conference and they came in here with a lot of confidence. They were the aggressor and they took it to us. Obviously in the first half they got to the foul line a lot more than we did and they did a great job of making it hard for us to run our plays. They were well-prepared and it was a rough first half and during parts of the third quarter when we let them make a run and get back in it."
"We were trying to match up with them some by going small, and finally said 'to heck with that,' and went ahead and got (Elissa) Cunane back in there to make them match up with us. I thought she did a great job. A lot of people did. Grace Hunter: we've been on her to get to the boards and she had 10 rebounds. Kiara Leslie with another great effort. It seemed like every time I looked down there she was skying up and getting a rebound. She had 14 boards. Grace had five assists. Ace hit threes again. What do you say? She was 4-7. Elissa Cunane really put on a show in the second half and I'm proud of what she was able to accomplish."
NC State next heads to Cancun, Mexico, to compete in the 2018 Cancun Challenge. At the tournament, the Wolfpack will play Michigan State on Nov. 22 at 6:30 pm ET and George Washington on Nov. 23 at 4 pm ET.
