COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The NC State men's soccer team (10-7-3) saw a very strong second season under head coach George Kiefer come to an end in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Championship Sunday afternoon at 15th-ranked and 11th-seeded Maryland by a final score of 2-0.
In a physical match that featured 26 fouls and four yellow cards, the Terrapins (9-6-4) took the lead in the 11th minute on an Amar Sejdic goal from 18 yards following an unfortunate Wolfpack turnover. Maryland then doubled its advantage on the other side of halftime when Sebastian Elney scored in the 57th minute shortly after a dangerous corner kick by teammate Donovan Pines.
The Wolfpack's best scoring opportunity of the afternoon came in the 78th minute when freshman Aidan Foster forced goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair into a tough save.
NC State's season ended after the Wolfpack achieved many milestones in 2018. The team qualified for its second consecutive NCAA Championship for the first time since the 1991 and 1992 seasons. The Wolfpack earned its first NCAA Championship victory (Nov. 15 over Campbell) since 1994. NC State also posted an unbeaten 8-0-3 mark in Raleigh and recorded its first 10-win season since 2012.
