RALEIGH, NC – The NC State men's golf team has signed Spencer Oxendine to a national letter of intent, head coach Press McPhaul announced on Friday.
"Spencer is powerful and explosive," McPhaul said. "He is an athlete on the course. His length and power are eye catching and a real asset. However, the real intangible that sets him apart is his desire, enthusiasm and inquisitiveness. He loves the game, loves competing and is not afraid to work or ask questions to grow as a player. We put a high value on those attributes, so we are thankful he is a part of our family.
Oxendine, a native of Fayetteville, NC, comes to the Pack as one of the top prep golfers in the state. The Jack Britt high school senior is coming off a successful summer that saw him win two tournaments and place second in the 104th Carolinas Amateur.
Oxendine opened the summer by winning the Creed Boy's Invitational by three shots with a tournament record score of five-under, 135. Two weeks later, he finished in a tie for third place at the North Carolina Amateur (the tournament was won by current NC State senior Harrison Rhoades) as he was the highest finisher in the Amateur by a player in the high school class of 2019. He registered another top-five finish a few weeks later when he tied for fourth place in the 40th Annual Junior North & South Championship at Pinehurst Country Club. His final total included a second-round score of 69 on the famed Pinehurst No. 2 course. After finishing in second place at the Carolinas Amateur, he closed his summer with a win at the Hope Valley Junior Invitational, clinching the win with a dominating final round score of 64.
In his junior season at Jack Britt, Oxendine finished in a tie for seventh in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A state tournament.
From the North Carolina 4A Mideast Regional at the end of April through the Hope Valley Junior Invitational in August, Oxendine entered 11 tournaments and finished in the top-10 of all 11 tournaments.
