#17 Wolfpack Handily Defeats Commodores

NC State picks up 21st consecutive home non-conference victory

RALEIGH – The 17th-ranked NC State women's basketball team improved to 3-0 for the eighth straight season on Thursday evening by defeating visiting Vanderbilt 74-54 on Kay Yow Court inside Reynolds Coliseum.
NC State fought through a challenging first quarter and emerged with a 16-15 lead through 10 minutes before scoring 21 of 29 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 37-23 advantage into halftime. The Wolfpack did not once allow the Commodores to pull within single digits during the second half, and ultimately ended the game on a 5-0 run over the final 3:24 to close out the comfortable victory.
Kiara Leslie led all players with 21 points on 7-11 shooting from the field. She was joined in double figures by Aislinn Konig (16 points), Grace Hunter (13), and freshman Elissa Cunane (10). Leslie added five assists and seven rebounds to her strong offensive effort. Sophomore Kai Crutchfield dished out a career high six assists, a figure that doubled her previous career high in the statistical category and ran up against zero turnovers committed.
Cierra Walker (17 points) led three Vanderbilt players in double figures. Chelsie Hall (14) and Mariella Fasoula (12) also had effective offensive performances for the visitors. Fasoula, a Boston College transfer, collected a game-high 11 rebounds for the lone double-double of the evening.
"I'm really proud of our effort," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "I thought we had a lot of energy. I'm really excited about the second quarter when we defensively held them to eight points. I thought our defense created a lot of offense for us. We were able to get out and run and really got our transition game going. Also, the fact that we had a lot of people contribute was great."
