NEW ORLEANS – NC State cross country head coaches Laurie Henes and Rollie Geiger have been named NCAA Southeast Region Cross Country Coaches of the Year, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Tuesday.
The honor is also known as the Rollie Geiger Award, celebrating the legacy of the current Wolfpack men's head coach. Geiger has won the award eight times and was last named Southeast Region Men's Coach of the Year in 2016.
The honors mark the fourth overall and third in a row for Henes, who was also named Southeast Region Women's Coach of the Year in 2007, 2016 and 2017.
NC State's men's and women's cross country teams swept the NCAA Southeast Regional last Friday in Rock Hill, S.C., each securing automatic berths to the NCAA National Championships. The Wolfpack was one of three programs to sweep its region and joins Arkansas as the only two programs to have both of their coaches honored as Regional Coaches of the Year.
Henes led the Wolfpack women to their third straight regional title, the most consecutive Southeast Regional wins in her tenure as women's head coach. In addition to the team's first-place finish, all five scorers garnered All-Region honors as Elly Henes, Dominique Clairmonte, Nell Crosby, Isabel Zimmermann and Heather Holt finished in the top 25. NC State's women were ranked No. 1 in the Southeast Region for the entirety of the 2018 season.
Under Geiger's leadership, NC State's men upset the top two teams in the region to claim the program's ninth Southeast Regional title since 2000. Geiger also saw all of his scorers honored as All-Region performers with Ian Shanklin, Joe Bistritz, Edwin Rutto, Elijah Moskowitz and Gavin Gaynor earning the nod. The men's win secured NC State's second sweep of the region in the last three seasons.
After sweeping the region, both Wolfpack squads earned spots in the top 20 of the national rankings. The women's program enters its final week of the season ranked No. 11 in the nation, and NC State's men jumped up an impressive 10 spots in the poll to check in at No. 16.
NC State will conclude its 2018 campaign at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which are set to be held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wis. on Saturday, Nov. 17.
