
Cole Named Semifinalist for 2018 Wuerffel Trophy

Wolfpack senior honored for community service
RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State senior punter A.J. Cole, III, has been named a semifinalist for the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy, presented by the Chick-fil-A Foundation®. Known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the Football Bowl Subdivision player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Cole, who will graduate in December with a degree in industrial engineering, has been one of the Wolfpack leaders in community service since he arrived on campus in January of 2015. He has spent each of his spring breaks serving the staff and students at Mountain Park Academy in Nakuru, Kenya. He was named to the 2017 AFCA AllState Good Works Team and was an academic All-ACC and all-district performer as well.

Also on the preseason watch list for the Ray Guy Award, Cole ranks fourth in school history in career punts (194), fourth in punting yards (8,195) and third in punt average (42.2). He is only the fourth four-year starter at punter in school history.Â

The 2018 Wuerffel Trophy winner will be invited to attend The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU and ESPN3 on Dec. 6, 2018, airing at 6 p.m. EST/5 p.m. CST, featuring interviews with award winners and finalists as they approach The Home Depot College Football Awards Show, the College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-fil-A Fan Experience in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The presentation of the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 50th Annual All Sports Association Awards Banquet on Feb. 15, 2019, in Fort Walton Beach.
