GREENVILLE, N.C. – The NC State softball team came up short to in-state opponent East Carolina 11-8 (10 inn) on Friday evening at ECU Softball Stadium in Greenville, N.C., in its second game of the fall season.
The Pirates took a 4-0 lead in the third inning on three base hits and an error. NC State cut its deficit in half with a two-run homer by Chandley Garner in the fourth. A combined six runs in its last four innings though allowed ECU to take an 11-3 lead heading into the top of the 10th. The Pack tried to rally in the final half inning, tacking on five runs thanks to a triple, double and three-run home run, but fell short.
Brigette Nordberg went 3-for-5 in the contest with a pair of singles and a triple, while Garner, Timberlyn Shurbutt and April Visser also turned in multi-hit performances. Garner and Haylee Kobziak drove in three RBI apiece.
Sydney Nester threw the first three innings in the circle for the Pack, giving up three earned runs. Devin Wallace entered the game in the fourth, giving up a pair of runs in the sixth and then two more in the seventh while striking out four batters. Kama Woodall threw the last two innings, allowing three runs to score on five hits.
The team returns to action Sunday for its first two of five home games this fall, as it will host Fayetteville Tech in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Dail Stadium. Admission is free.
