RALEIGH, N.C. - One team fills the stat sheet through the air, while the other does so on the ground. And when they meet Saturday afternoon at Carter-Finley Stadium, the contrasts between the offenses at NC State (4-0, 1-0 ACC) and Boston College will be obvious (4-1, 1-0).
The ACC Atlantic Division battle begins at 12:30 p.m., and the game will be televised on ACC RSN.
Â
The 23rd-ranked Wolfpack, of course, possesses the league's most prolific pass offense anchored by veteran quarterback Ryan Finley. The ACC's leading passer, has put up eye-popping numbers through four games, averaging 328.2 yards per contest. The graduate from Phoenix as completed 68.6 percent of his throws with just one interception.
On the flip side, Boston College features the conference's top rusher in AJ Dillon, who averages 130.4 rushing yards per contest. The sophomore's persistent, powerful running style is the main reason the Eagles rank third behind only Georgia Tech and Wake Forest in rushing yards.
One week after holding Virginia's productive running attack in check, the NC State defense will be asked to do it again. And with Dillon drawing so much attention from opposing defenses, Boston College quarterback Anthony Brown has been successful at making defenses pay with deep throws off of play-action fakes.
"They're tied for 18th nationally and they lead the ACC in explosive plays over 20 yards," said NC State head coach Dave Doeren. "They getting a lot of big plays, not just from Dillon. They're getting behind a lot of people in the pass game because so much of the focus is on Dillon."
Dillon was the also under the microscope from the Boston media this week, not because of his running but due to his health status. Following Wednesday's practice, BC head coach Steve Addazio said the 6-0, 245-pound sophomore did not participate after injuring an ankle in last weekend's victory over Temple.
"He's working hard and looking really good," Addazio said. "It's day-to-day right now."
The reigning ACC Rookie of the Year has averaged 6.2 yards per carry through five games.
And while the Wolfpack is known mostly for its passing prowess, State did manage to get its running attack cranked up in last week's 35-21 triumph over Virginia. The Pack put up a season-best 176 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per rush. Rookie runner Ricky Person led the way with 108 yards on 14 tries.
"With our offense, you can't just shut down one area of it because we have so many playmakers and can do so many things," said senior center Garrett Bradbury. "Rhythm and confidence is a big part of it, just trusting the guy next to you."
Still, Finley and his deep, acrobatic corps of receivers have made the Pack a must-see show in west Raleigh. Finley has been so deadly accurate at times, that even his pass-catchers are amazed.
"He puts some balls on the money, that I'm on the field saying 'wow,'" said receiver Stephen Louis. "Some of the balls he throws at me, it's crazy the way he puts the ball right behind the defender. It's definitely amazing."
NC State and Boston College have split the last eight meetings in the series, and the road team has won the last four matchups. The Eagles are up 9-6 all-time against the Wolfpack, and NC State will be looking for its first home win against BC since 2012.
A win over the Eagles would also give NC State a 2-0 start in ACC play for the second year in a row, and for only the fifth time since 2000.
