Not many people have the unique opportunity to play against a sibling at any point in their career, especially in an NCAA Division I sport. NC State volleyball freshman Pam Chukwujekwu will be among that group after Friday's match, as her older sister, Amaka, is a sophomore for Boston College.
Â
"I'm pretty excited to see her and play against her," Pam said in regard to making the trip to Chesnut Hill. "I haven't seen her in a while, so it will be nice to see her."
Â
The duo played together for three seasons at Reservoir High School in Laurel, Md., helping lead the Gators to the Chesapeake Region Volleyball Association (CHRVA) Regional Championship in 2016.
Â
Friday's match has been starred on the calendar for both sisters, as it is the lone meeting of the season between NC State and Boston College. Pam says that trash talking between the sisters began early this week with each conveying why her team will win.
Â
"It would be pretty nice to stuff block her or something like that, because she's all Pam I'm better than you, so it would be nice to get a kill in front of her or block her," Pam said with a smile.
Â
Ironically, neither Chukwujekwu sister played volleyball before high school but both were awarded scholarships to play in the ACC. Pam said that Amaka started playing because all of her friends were playing and as the little sister, she started playing as a result of her older sister playing.
Â
"She started playing volleyball first and I'm the little sister, so of course I had to copy her."Â
Â
Throughout their playing careers, Amaka has always given her younger sister advice on what to do on the court and Pam says that something that she misses with not having her older sister always around. However, with the matchup looming Amaka did not offer any advice for Friday's contest.
Â
Including this year's meeting, the duo will square off at least three times during their collegiate careers. Chukwujekwu said that her dad and brother would be in attendance for the matchup of sisters and that the family will watch neutrally hoping that both do well.
Â
Â
Pam said that she did not go on any recruiting trips with her sister but knew that she loved the state of North Carolina and found everything that she wanted in NC State.
Â
"I just loved North Carolina in general and I couldn't find anything I didn't like about NC State or the program. I liked the team and the culture."
Â
The 'Battle of the Chukwujekwu Sisters' begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday night inside Power Gym on the BC campus and the contest will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra.
