CALGARY, Alberta – Wolfpack junior Alexis Galarneau opened competition at the Calgary National Bank Challenger with a pair of wins, as he picked up first-round victories in both singles and doubles play Tuesday.
The tournament is a part of the ATP Challenger Tour, a feeder circuit to the ATP World Tour, and it provides Galarneau a chance to earn ATP points and continue focusing on his development for professional tennis.
"This tournament is a good opportunity to implement all of the things I've been working on this fall," said Galarneau. "It gives me a chance to improve my world ranking and see what level I am at with my tennis game. I played smart during my first round of competition, and I was very happy to be able to bounce back from a tough match at the Cary Challenger. I've been working on my tactical side with the coaches, and it showed during my first-round matches."
Galarneau matched up against Pablo Vivero Gonzalez (ATP 455) in the first round of singles action, taking the first set by a 6-2 score. In the second set, both players held serve for the majority of the frame until Galarneau managed to break Vivero Gonzalez's last service game, resulting in a 6-4 second-set score that secured the win.
The Laval, Quebec native went on to compete in doubles later in the afternoon, pairing up with fellow Canadian Steven Diez. Galarneau and Diez powered their way to a 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 victory over Cam Ilkel and Roberto Ortega-Olmedo to advance to the doubles quarterfinal.
Galarneau will continue singles competition Wednesday evening, as he faces the Challenger's top-seeded Jordan Thompson (ATP 108) in the Round of 16. That match is scheduled to begin not before 8 p.m. EST and will be played on the National Bank Court. Galarneau and Diez will play their doubles quarterfinal match Thursday.
