GoPack.com recently caught up with senior goalkeeper Sydney Wootten about her career-high 16 saves at No. 13 Florida State on Saturday afternoon. She played a crucial part in the team's 1-1 draw.
What were your overall thoughts of the game?
"My first thought is that it was pretty fun. It's fun having a game like that. I haven't had to do that in a while, and it's nice to stand up for the team since they stand up for me everyday. I thought we had some opportunities to get in Florida State's face a little more than we did, but we played our hearts out and was so proud of everyone who put an effort in."
You had a career-high 16 saves in the game. Did it feel like you were doing that much work?
"Yeah, I was pretty tired afterwards. In training you make a least 40 saves, and then in a game if you make more than five it's considered a pretty hefty game. So making 16, it's kind of like a practice but with all of the stress that comes with the game day environment. It's definitely more impactful than just a practice."
Some of those saves were absolutely incredible. You managed to keep the team in the game the entire time. What factors do you think play into being able to have a performance like that?
"I don't want to say it was luck because we put in a ton of hours training. A lot of it is the little things we do in practice like footwork and extending, and every little bit of it goes into making big-time saves like that. A lot of it has to do with being in the right place at the right time as well as being able to read the game. Being able to put yourself in a position to make saves like that is definitely something that contributes to that type of game."
This is probably the hardest you've had to work all season, would you say it's the hardest you've worked in your career in a single game?
"My freshman year was hard, but I would consider the highlight game of my career. We still have more games to play though, so hopefully it doesn't stop here."
You guys ended a really tough road swing with a point in ACC play. How do you think everyone feels with just three games left in the regular season?
"It was a great point, and everyone should be super motivated to get nine more. That's what we have left, and we should believe that we can do it because we have the ability to. This is a very talented team and I'm so grateful to play with them."
