Wolfpack freshman recognized among nation’s top freshmen
CULVER CITY, Calif. – Despite missing more than a month of the season due to injury, NC State volleyball's Melissa Evans has been named a Prep Volleyball All-Freshmen Honorable Mention Selection as one of the nation's top freshmen.
Â
Evans also garnered a spot on the nine-member Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) All-Freshmen Team announced in November.
Â
The Lone Tree, Colo., native played in 20 matches during the season starting 15 of those contests. She finished the year with 202 kills, the fifth most on the team.
Â
Prior to suffering the injury, Evans was second on the Wolfpack with 161 kills through the first 13 matches. She recorded double-digit kills in her first five collegiate matches, highlighted by a pair of 20-kill performances against Missouri State and Auburn.
Â
After tallying 35 kills over the first weekend of ACC play, Evans collected ACC Freshman of the Week honors. She logged 20 kills in her first collegiate conference match against UNC-Chapel Hill and put down 15 kills versus Notre Dame.
Â
The NC State standout charted double-digit kills in 10 matches on the year, including 15 kills in the Pack's first NCAA Tournament win in program history against Oregon State. Evans compiled a .435 attacking percentage with 11 kills on 23 attempts with only one error in the Wolfpack's match versus Florida, the National Championship Runner-Up.
Â
NC State's record-breaking season came to a close in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against second-ranked Texas.
Â
The Pack finished the year with a 21-12 overall record, highlighted by a program record 15 ACC wins. NC State also compiled a perfect 10-0 mark in home ACC matches for the first time in program history.
