RALEIGH – The NC State women's basketball team (12-4, 1-2 ACC) held the Virginia Cavaliers (10-6, 3-0 ACC) to zero field goals in the final 7:43 of the game but ultimately fell 73-63 Thursday evening inside Reynolds Coliseum.
Armani Hawkins set a new career high in scoring as she led the Wolfpack offense with 14 points on 5-9 shooting while also chipping in six rebounds. Kaila Ealey also scored in double digits for the second game in a row, putting up 13 on the night. Chelsea Nelson led all players with nine rebounds.
Virginia's J'Kyra Brown led all players on the floor with 18 points after going 4-6 (.667) from behind the three-point line. She was joined in double figures by teammates Aliyah Huland El (13 points), Dominique Toussaint (11), and Jocelyn Willoughby (10). The Cavaliers shot 23-54 (.426) from the field throughout the game.
"Rough night," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "Second game in a row (that we) kind of got off to a slow start. I just felt like we didn't come out with the same energy and edge that we normally have. As bad as I bragged on them today at shoot around, the job they've been doing defensively in particular and then on the boards as well, and then we gave up 40 points in the first half. We just had a rough night. A lot of players seemed a step slow. Offensively, we struggled some. I'll take the blame for that. We didn't look like we were very prepared for their mixtures of defense. They did a pretty good job of juggling between man-to-man and their 2-3 zone, which they sometimes really expanded out wide and other times kept it in tighter. We just didn't do a good job of attacking it. Rough night, and it doesn't get any easier. We've got our work cut out for us (with the games coming up)."
The Cavaliers started the game hot, hitting seven of their first nine field goal attempts to take an 18-5 lead with 4:23 remaining in the first quarter. NC State completed a pair of three-point plays, and Hawkins hit back-to-back threes to lead the Wolfpack on a 12-2 scoring run to cut the Cavaliers' lead to four (26-22) as the opening quarter came to a close.
NC State cut the Virginia lead to one point (26-25) when Ealey hit a three-pointer for the first made field goal of the second quarter with 8:17 on the clock. Virginia would extend its lead back to eight in the late stages of the quarter before taking a 40-33 advantage into the halftime break.
The Cavaliers hit three more three-pointers in the third quarter to extend their lead to 59-45 through 30 minutes of game action, and though the Wolfpack outscored them 18-14 in the fourth quarter, NC State would come no closer than within eight points (69-61) down the stretch.
NC State makes the short trip to Durham on Sunday, Jan. 7 to continue ACC competition against No. 17 Duke. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Cameron Indoor Stadium with live television coverage provided by the ACC's Regional Sports Network affiliates.
