PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior defender Caleb Duvernay of the NC State men's soccer team was selected Sunday afternoon in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft by 2015 MLS Cup champion Portland Timbers FC.
Duvernay was chosen in the third round of the draft and was the 61st overall pick. He was the 18th Atlantic Coast Conference player selected in the draft, and with two more league players selected after him, was a part of a league-record total of 20 ACC players selected in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft, which was more than twice as many as any other conference and the most in a single year in league history.
The defender from Cary, N.C., is the first Wolfpack player to be selected in the MLS SuperDraft since Clement Simonin (ninth overall – Toronto FC) and Conor Donovan (22nd overall – Orlando City SC) were chosen in the 2015 edition.
Duvernay concluded his Wolfpack career in November as the most experienced player on the program's active roster, appearing in 67 total matches as a defender and making 65 starts. He scored two goals and distributed seven assists throughout his career, with both of his goals serving as match winners. Duvernay played an important role on a defense that allowed merely 1.11 goals per match during the 2017 season. He played all 1,703 minutes of the season and showed great restraint in his role as the team's starting left back, not earning a single caution throughout the year. Duvernay also earned ACC Academic Honor Roll recognition at the conclusion of the 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
