January 10, 2018
RALEIGH – The NC State women's basketball team used a 19-2 run that spanned the final 2:57 of the second quarter and the first 4:10 of the third quarter to earn a lead it would not relinquish during a gritty 56-43 Atlantic Coast Conference win over Georgia Tech.
The Wolfpack's starting five carried the team to victory, scoring 53 of NC State's 56 points. Kiara Leslie led the way with 14 points in her 12th double-digit scoring performance of the season. Chelsea Nelson and Aislinn Konig joined her in double figures, each putting up 11 points. Nelson once again dominated on the glass. She pulled down 14 rebounds, just one shy of her career-high of 15 which she tied in the Wolfpack's last game against Duke.
Postgame Notes
- NC State leads the series against Georgia Tech 46-23 after tonight's win. The Wolfpack is 23-8 at home against the Yellow Jackets and has won five consecutive games in the series overall.
- With the win, head coach Wes Moore picked up the 99th of his NC State career (99-48).
- The Wolfpack did not trail in the second half after taking a 21-20 lead over the Yellow Jackets as time expired in the first half.
- The Wolfpack held Georgia Tech 26 points below its 69 points per game average.
- NC State outrebounded Georgia Tech 43-36, collecting 18 off the offensive glass.
"I'm really proud of the way our players came out in the third period and played with a lot of energy," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame press conference. "We finally got some transition. We talked about that at halftime. We had zero transition points. This team's got to be able to get some easy points, whether it's transition or offensive rebounds. We have to be able to get some of those. We were able to do that to start the second half, and I thought that was a big difference. Also, the last two years, they've (Georgia Tech) outrebounded us in double digits, double figures. We knew that was going to be an important part of the game, so I was proud of their ability to win the rebound battle. (It was a) good team effort, and it'll be good to have a day off for the team (tomorrow)."
Near the end of a tight first quarter, Konig nailed a three to give the Wolfpack a 10-9 lead after ten minutes of play.
Georgia Tech responded with a 9-0 run to open the first 4:40 of the second quarter and took an 18-10 lead, but the Yellow Jackets would go on to score only once more in the first half.
NC State tallied nine straight points to close out the second quarter, capped off by a Leslie triple at the buzzer just six seconds before halftime. The Wolfpack redshirt junior led all players on the court with 10 points at the end of the first half. Despite shooting just 8-36 (.222) from the field, NC State led Georgia Tech 21-20 at the half.
Scoring was not a problem for NC State in the second half. The Wolfpack posted its third highest single-quarter shooting percentage of the season, going 9-14 (.643) from the field during the third quarter.
NC State carried a 44-34 lead into fourth quarter and would not allow the Yellow Jackets any closer than within eight points (44-36) during the rest of the game.
The Wolfpack returns to Reynolds Coliseum to host Syracuse on Sunday, Jan. 14. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., with live video coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
