Evans Garners ACC Freshman of the Week Honors

Wolfpack freshman tallied 35 kills in her first weekend of ACC play
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following a pair of standout performances in the first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) matches of her career, NC State volleyball's Melissa Evans has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

Evans becomes the first Wolfpack player to garner a weekly honor from the conference this season. Jessica Kemp was the last NC State student-athlete to collect the award when she was tabbed the league's freshman of the week on Nov. 28, 2016.

The Lone Tree, Colo., native was a vital piece of the Wolfpack's success over the weekend, as she enjoyed strong performances in both contests. On Friday against UNC-Chapel Hill, Evans rose to the occasion in her first ACC match swatting 20 kills to tie for the match-high along with teammate Julia Brown.

She came out on fire in that match, recording six kills on eight attempts with zero errors to lead the Pack in the opening frame. Evans turned in an impressive third set with six kills on seven attempts and did not have a miscue in that frame either. The freshman finished the match with a .429 attacking percentage to go along with three digs and two blocks.

Against Notre Dame Sunday afternoon, Evans put down 15 kills versus the conference's top defense to tie for the team high along with Brown. She has now recorded double-digit kills in eight of the Wolfpack's 13 matches in 2017.

Evans was also stellar defensively against the Fighting Irish, tallying a career-best seven blocks in NC State's season-high 18.5 block effort.

For the weekend, she compiled 35 kills complemented by a .314 attacking percentage. Additionally, Evans logged nine blocks and four digs. Evans is second on the Wolfpack in kills this season with 161.

NC State returns to action this weekend when the Wolfpack hits the road for the first time in ACC play this season. The Pack travels to Georgia Tech Friday for a 7 p.m. tilt and Clemson Sunday for a 1 p.m. first serve.
