SPECIAL EVENTS IN ATHLETIC VENUES BECOMING LATEST TREND IN REVENUE SOURCE

First Annual Athletics Special Events Conference to be held in Raleigh, May, 2018
Sept. 20, 2017
RALEIGH, N.C - In an effort to keep up with the inflating costs of facility enhancements among athletic departments, renting the facilities for outside special events are becoming the hottest new trend in alternative ways to generate revenue.Â
While booster and donor dollars can only spread so far, athletic departments are relying on creative ways to rent their facilities for special events when not in use by one of their teams. The trend is rampantly becoming savvy and successful at helping pay the bills while offering trendy venues for many types of events.
NC State Athletics, for one, has had a full time Director of Special Events position for just over a year, and has seen revenue value in this position as it draws dollars to the department while offering unique venues for events like receptions, business functions, concerts and political events.
In an effort to collaborate those in the field of athletics special events and create awareness and growth initiatives, NC State's Director of Special Events, Sales and Operations, Colleen Johnson, is formulating a conference for those like her in this field, and will host the First Annual Athletics Special Events Conference. The event will be held May 14-16, 2018, in Raleigh, N.C.
"When I first took on this new role this summer, I was enlightened by the opportunity to find innovative ways to host events in such unique venues like our athletic facilities. Through outreach to others in this field, I've found we have a unique core in the growing profession who could benefit from an annual convention at one of our respected institutions," Johnson said. "The challenge of working as the sole person in this field inspired me to reach out nationally to develop a conference. I want to provide an opportunity for us in this profession of special events within our athletic departments to share concepts and create awareness that these state of the art facilities can be generating revenue when not in use by one of our teams."
Johnson is encouraging those in this field to reach out to her directly so she can add to her growing list of peers across the country and provide more information on the conference.
"I've built a network of more than 20 people from Division I institutions nationwide who are committed to the conference, but I'm hoping word gets out that I'm developing this network and want to be sure anyone who's in this field is invited to the conference in May 2018," she said. "I'm reaching out to speakers and presenters who would benefit this unique bunch, and am receiving great feedback and encouragement to continue to build it to where we can do this once a year and grow together. It can only help us with professional development and our athletic departments with enlightened concepts for special events."
