CARY, N.C. – The NC State men's tennis team concluded action at the Duke James Bonk Invite on Sunday. The tournament was highlighted by a doubles title for Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic and a run to the singles final by Georgiy Malyshev.
"It was a great job by Igor and Ivan to win the doubles draw," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "We haven't had that many practices, so to have some of the guys be able to compete and get four singles matches and three doubles matches in is great for our development. I'm excited for us to get better in the next couple of weeks."
HIGHLIGHTS:
Igor and Ivan went 3-0 in doubles this weekend, taking down opponents from three different ACC schools over the course of play on Friday and Saturday. The brothers first defeated Louisville's Brandon Lancaster and George Hedley on Friday, before facing Simon Soendergaard and Josh Peck of UNC-Chapel Hill in the semifinals. The Tar Heel duo was the top seed in the bracket, but Igor and Ivan took control in a tiebreaker for the match to earn a spot in the final. On Saturday morning, the pair beat Duke's Ryan Dickerson and Spencer Furman to win the doubles title.
Malyshev also saw success at the tournament with a 3-1 singles record on the weekend. He took down No. 61 Catalin Mateas of Duke in the first round on Friday. Malyshev carried his momentum into the second day of play, beating Arvid Noren of VCU and Ryan Dickerson of Duke to send him to the final. The Wolfpack junior came just short of the title, falling to Josh Peck of UNC-Chapel Hill on Sunday.
UP NEXT:
The Wolfpack will spend the coming weeks in preparation for the ITA All-American Championships, which runs from Sept. 30 to Oct. 9 in Tulsa, Okla.
