CARY, N.C. – The NC State women's tennis team opened play at the Duke Bonk Invitational in its first tournament of the fall on Friday at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina. The opening day of play saw the Wolfpack secure three doubles victories along with two in singles.
Doubles
The pairing of junior Claudia Wiktorin & sophomore Anna Rogers showed why it was listed as the No. 26 doubles tandem in the country in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason rankings, defeating Duke's Rebecca Smaller & Emma Lazic 8-3. They then defeated Daniela Pedraza Novak & Asuka Kawai of Illinois 8-5, rounding out their perfect morning.
Junior Bianca Moldovan & sophomore Adriana Reami impressed early, overcoming Maggie Kane & Cassandra Vasquez of the University of North Carolina 8-1. They then fell 8-1 to UNC's Chloe Oullet-Pitzer & Makenna Jones.
Singles
The Wolfpack earned two wins in singles on Friday afternoon. Moldovan met Kane of UNC, who she played in doubles earlier in the day and overcame her in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-3. Reami defeated Florida's Peggy Porter 6-2, 6-1, while Wiktorin fell to Brooke Austin of Florida, who is ranked No. 93 on the ITA preseason poll 3-6, 2-6. Rogers faced Duke's Ellyse Hamlin, losing the opening set 6-4. She then battled back to win the second 4-6 and eventually fell in the third-set tiebreaker 7-5.
Thoughts from Head Coach Simon Earnshaw:
"Coming into the first competitive play of the fall it can be difficult to always predict how exactly the players are going to perform. In some ways that was the case today but in others we actually did pretty much what I expected us to do. The positive takeaway is that we just hit our goal, and that's always a great in that everyone plays a part in achieving that. Moving forward though, how we come out the next two days will tell me much more about how the experience we have gained the past two years has helped us grow individually and as a team over the summer, as well as thus far this fall."
Up next
At 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, Rogers & Wiktorin face Meible Chi & Kelly Chen of Duke, while Reami & Moldovan take on Georgia Tech's Kenya Jones & Nami Otsuka in their third doubles matches.
Singles play will commence tomorrow at 12:30 p.m., with Reami taking on Victoria Flores of Georgia Tech in a semifinal. Moldovan also plays in a semifinal against Georgia Tech's Kenya Jones, while Rogers and Wiktorin play consolation semifinals against Danni Vines of Furman and Smaller of Duke respectively.
